Albert Fritz gets 24 hours to say why he shouldn’t be banned from DA

Sacked Western Cape Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz has been given 24 hours by the DA’s federal executive to state reasons why he should not be suspended from the DA’s caucus and party-related activities.

Albert Fritz fired

This followed Fritz .’s dismissal on Tuesday from the provincial cabinet by Prime Minister Alan Winde, after receiving the findings of an independent inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct against the MEC.

The outside investigation, conducted by attorney Jennifer Williams, found sufficient credibility in the allegations of sexual misconduct and alcohol abuse against the former Western Cape DA leader.

It also found that there was ample evidence that Fritz created an environment conducive to sexual harassment, or alternatively the sexual abuse of young women.

‘Fast and hard action’

Federal Council DA chair Helen Zille said the party took note of the publication of the independent report, including Winde’s decision to fire Fritz.

Zille said the case had been referred to the party’s federal legal committee for further action.

“The DA takes the issue of sexual impropriety, sexual abuse and assault very seriously and will not hesitate to act quickly and sternly when these matters arise,” she said in a brief statement

“The DA is also very aware of the responsibility to protect victims and ensure they do not become victims of secondary abuse as a result of reporting allegations of abuse and sexual assault.”

Bindweed ‘extremely angry’

Meanwhile, Winde said he was “extremely angry” at what appeared to be verifiable cases of serious sexual misconduct against Fritz, especially given his position as the MEC in charge of community safety.

“It is a shocking violation of his oath of office and the principles of our constitutional democracy,” he said.

Bindweed suspended Fritz in January of this year over what he called serious allegations of misconduct at the time.

Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Anroux Marais was subsequently appointed to act in Fritz’s position.

Fritz also agreed to step down as the DA’s interim leader of the Western Cape – a position he has held since last year Bonginkosi Madikizela was forced to resign, due to a scandal over his qualifications.
