Alleged drug courier caught with cocaine and heroin at Cape Town airport

On Tuesday, February 22, a 28-year-old woman was arrested in Cape Town’s international airport for possession of cocaine and heroin.

According to the police, swift action was taken following a tip that led to the successful drug bust and arrest of a suspect.

The suspect was intercepted after a tip was given for an integrated multidisciplinary operation including the Hawks, the South Africa Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) along with Crime Intelligence and the Customs Branch of the South African Revenue Services (SARS).

They were warned about a suspect traveling from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Cape Town, where the suspect would travel on Qatar Airlines. When searching the woman’s luggage, authorities are said to have found more than 2.7 kg of cocaine and 200 grams of heroin, which was also found hidden in her shoes.

She was immediately arrested, the drugs in her possession had a street value of R870,000.

The acting provincial chief of the Hawks in the Western Cape praised the team for the failure.

“This is an indication of the capacity and capabilities of the joint security forces to deal decisively with numerous attempts to use drug smuggling as a transit route.” said Brigadier General Mushavhaduvha Ramovha.

Police say the suspect is expected to appear before the Bellville magistrate today, while police continue their investigation.
