Déjà vu (in blue) all over again at the Big T

Classic day at Turffontein on Saturday seems to be a repeat of Guineas day from a month ago – certainly in terms of the headliners.

Rain In Holland and Safe Passage won the first motos of the Triple Crown and Tiara at the time and it seems very likely that they will put in a repeat in the second moto, the SA Classic and Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Classic.

The déjà vu feeling is only enhanced by the fact that the horses run in the same colors – the blue and white of Gaynor Rupert’s Drakenstein Stud.

Fortunately, the three-year-olds are trained by two different guys, although former champions Sean Tarry and Mike de Kock are close neighbors in their barns in Randjesfontein.

Tarry’s Rain In Holland scored in style in the 1600m Gauteng Fillies Guineas and although she has never made it to the 1800m of this competition, the manner of that victory – and her pedigree – suggests she will make it with ease. Richard Fourie returns to keep the Tiara dream alive.

Highly rated Desert Miracle was favorite for those Fillies Guineas but couldn’t find her best on the day. Even if she manages to find it this time, she can be challenged by the extra ground.

Fillies Guineas runner up Sprinkles also has a shade of stamina, but she has been backed in the ante-post market and that kind of move should always be respected.

De Kock said after the Guineas that Safe Passage was ideally suited up to 1800m and beyond. None of the several horses who resisted again seem to have that ability — or the ability to raise their game significantly enough to give Silvano’s son a gauntlet.

A very interesting classic runner is the Fabian Habib trained Zeus, who is undefeated in four at a much lower level and enters this class 1 test which may be undervalued by the handicappers. He is a “could be anything” package and nervous gamblers may want to include him in their permutations.

A great day of entertainment is on the agenda, with 11 races including the Grade 2 Hawaii Stakes carded and a predicted Pick 6 pool of R5 million.
