Ex-Pirates striker Shonga reflects on dream start at Sekhukhune

Justin Shonga got off to a dream start to his career at Sekhukhune United, scoring on his debut for Babina Noko last weekend.

The Zambian striker scored the opening goal on Sunday when Sekhukhune defeated Baroka FC 4-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Shonga scored the goal just three minutes into the game, while Chibuike Ohizu was also scoring again after recovering from a braced injury and Vusumuzi Mncube scored the last goal.

Shonga, a former Orlando Pirates striker, has struggled to find a new home since leaving the Buccaneers, where he played brief spells with the likes of Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila, Cape Town City and Ismaily SC in the Egyptian League.

“It’s a nice feeling, it’s a good start for me. You know, in football I have a hard time in teams. I just want to keep up the momentum. If you’re playing for a new club and you’ve just arrived, you have to adapt to the way they play, you have to work extra hard to get into the starting lineup. Obviously I have to push myself and I’m so happy with my start,” said the striker.

The win against Bakgaga placed Sekhukhune in sixth place in the league table with 28 points after 19 matches.

Head coach MacDonald Makhubedu wants his side to continue to achieve positive results and says he is pleased that his side is doing so well.

“We played well, a good derby, we wanted to win and brag. I’m happy for my boys, happy for the fans. We will continue to do well and make them proud, we did a good performance, I am very happy for my boys, good luck for Baroka,” said the coach.
