Former spy boss Arthur Fraser lied about his qualifications

Former intelligence chief Arthur Fraser does not have a degree from the University of London, as stated on his resume.

Fraser was Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services until 2021, when his contract expired.

He was State Security Service (SSA) director general before being transferred to correctional services in 2018, following scathing corruption charges against him in running the domestic intelligence division.

A known supporter of former President Jacob Zuma, Fraser signed Zuma’s release from KwaZulu-Natal’s Escort Prison on medical grounds.

He later revealed that he rejected parole and chose to put the former president on medical parole instead.

Fraser’s claims in his resume that he had enrolled in a BA degree in film and video production at the prestigious institution, graduating with the degree in hand, was untrue.

An investigation by journalist and author Jacques Pauw found the former spy boss never set foot in the University of London.

The institution also does not offer film and video production training, read the report.

Pauw said he sent questions to the spokesman for the penitentiary service Singabakho Nxumalo during the investigation in 2020, but never received an answer to his question.

Nxumalo promised to return to him after speaking with Fraser, but he never did.

While Pauw continued to ask Fraser and his lawyer for proof of the qualification Eric Mabuzadetails about Fraser’s qualifications have been changed on the department’s website.

“Since communicating with you on March 4, 2020, Mr. Fraser’s profile on the Correctional Services Department’s website has changed. He now claims to have a BA (Hons) degree in Film and Video Production from the ‘London Institute’.

“There is no London Institute,” Pauw said in an email to Nxumalo.

There was no London Institute listed on the British Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, the Study-UK British Council or the UK Council for International Student Affairs.

Pauw said: “There is a London Film Institute, but it doesn’t offer university degrees and doesn’t even have a website. There are 18 universities in London – and the London Institute is not one of them.”

Mabuza replied that since his client Fraser was suing Pauw, he preferred to take all cases to court.

The former prison boss sues Pauw and . at NB Publishers for R35 million for the allegations stated in the author’s The Guardians of the President book published in 2017.

Fraser said the book made false and defamatory claims against him.
