Gauteng reaches 9 million Covid-19 vaccination milestone



Gauteng province said it has delivered nine million Covid-19 vaccines, bringing the province closer to its goal of ensuring as many eligible people as possible are protected from serious illness, restoring and ensuring livelihoods. to get the economy back on track.

The milestone was announced on Saturday by the province.

Gauteng Health Department spokesman Kwarra Kekana said the milestone is an important achievement for the province.

“Gauteng Province continues to use various means to bring the vaccination campaign to communities. The comprehensive school program has already ensured that even students aged 12 and older get the shot as schools have resumed normal classes.”

Kekana said the government recently launched the #KeReady campaign to intensify contacts with the 18-34-year-old cohort to ensure they are not left behind.

“Pop-up sites and workplace programs continue, including the highly impactful Vooma Weekends campaigns.”

In order to vaccinate as many people as possible, the Gauteng government, together with its social partners, is continuing the workplace vaccination campaign.

“’Jabs on the Job’ campaign aims to improve access to vaccines for workers, contractors and surrounding communities. Many employers have partnered with the government and are setting up vaccination sites on their premises to help get the economy back on track.”

Gauteng has so far recorded at least 1,195,572 infections, of which 1,168,663 recovered and 20,584 deaths.

On March 4, 2022, a total of 9,03,580 Covid-19 vaccinations were administered in the province.

Gauteng’s health department has urged the public to adhere to non-pharmaceutical interventions by maintaining a safe physical distance, wearing a mask, regularly washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer and attending large gatherings. to avoid.

Nationally, the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country currently stands at 3,681,437, while 99,517 people have died from the virus.

The recovery rate stands at 96.6%, meaning more than 3,557,369 people had recovered from the virus.

In the field of vaccination, more than 31.9 million doses have been administered.
