Inside Rosebank’s new ‘retro yet stylish’ Voco Hotel

The Rosebank area is enjoying a new spring in step with the wave of development that has swept across the site in recent years. This wave now includes the introduction of the Voco Hotel brand in the heart of the area’s lifestyle hub.

Opened in February, Rosebank’s Voco Johannesburg caters to a market of business travelers as it is located in one of the most prestigious addresses in South Africa’s commercial and business hub. The hotel is also right next to Rosebank Mall and about a 100m walk from the Gautrain station.

Have the opportunity to stay in the chic hotel with valet parking, workshop and soon an open gym, Voco ticks all the boxes in terms of accessibility and convenience for a traveler and corporate customers.

The moment you walk into the lobby, the grand interior and look and feel is a touch of the past in the present. The gold, the lush green, the different shades of brown and the warm lighting give a business atmosphere with a touch of fun.

One cannot miss the stylish and cozy Proud Mary restaurant in the building. The minimalist look is carried through in the rooms, which are industrial and retro in design. They are open plan, have high ceilings, are quite spacious and have a nice view of Rosebank.

The bathrooms with greyish tiling, with a touch of black sanitary ware (taps, shower head, handles) are totally trendy. While a large oval bathroom is always an eye-catcher, one could argue that a large overhead shower is too, which was the case in the hotel’s superior king room.

Due to the hotel being quite new, there were a few missteps in communication between the hotel and the restaurant in terms of complimentary breakfast for guests, which was easily modified during our stay and quickly resolved by the wonderful staff.

Voco hotel rooms

There are 131 rooms spread over six floors, ranging from standard and superior to family and premium.

You can spend your entire stay in your room as there is an inviting bed, you can work, watch TV or watch the beautiful sunsets, but for those who want to get out and about there are many options.

Jessica Redinger, general manager of Voco Johannesburg Rosebank, said the brand has expanded since its inception in 2018.

“Voco is a lifestyle brand for an intercontinental hotel group, it’s been a pretty fast growing brand. There are now 25 open and 50 are now in the pipeline.” She says Voco is a sustainable brand and they have a quirky element. Like having three mascots.

An owl represents me time in court, while a flamingo represents the life of the Voco, before and after the drinks and then a finch, who is chatty and a warm welcome at the reception,” she continued.

Proud Mary

The restaurant in the hotel Proud Mary has become a hub of activity for many foodies and people who want to get a good meal and drinks.

Redinger says partnering with Proud Mary made sense as they are experts in their field and wanted to take advantage of this to provide their guests with a full experience of service.

The food in the restaurant is extensive and affordable, top choices are the falafel tabbouleh salad, very filling and flavorful as it is filled with crispy chickpea falafels, walnut, beet hummus, cauliflower and orange tabbouleh, dukkah, avo, and citrus vinaigrette.

Head to the cafe for the baked goods and pastries, which are hard to ignore.

Redinger says he hopes Voco Johannesburg Rosebank will become the ideal place for staycations and international guests who choose the hotel as their home base before exploring the rest of South Africa.
