KZN Transport department broken into, state firearms stolen

Two offices of the KwaZulu-Natal transportation department in Durban and Eshowe were broken into last weekend.

At the Rossburgh office in Durban, burglars attacked a guard on duty, leading to the temporary closure of the test station.

On Sunday evening, another office of the Transport Department in Eshowe was also broken into.

Burglars handcuffed the guard and then stole seven state firearms and keys to state vehicles.

“Both cases are given priority in the police investigation,” said KZN Transport MEC Peggy Nkonyeni.

Nkonyeni expressed his anger at the fact that criminals are now targeting state institutions.

“The modus operandi seems similar in these two incidents.

“We are concerned that state institutions are being targeted,” Nkonyeni said.

“It is dangerous to have state firearms in the hands of criminals. We call on the police to urgently find these criminals and reclaim state resources,” she added.

The KZN transport department has also assigned a management team to visit the two centers to examine measures to improve safety.

Nkonyeni also called on members of the information community to work with the police to resolve the issue quickly.
