Last field for Cape Derby

All the major horses held out and that will see 11 runners receive the card to set the R1-million Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby over 2000m in Kenilworth on Saturday. There were only two shots – Mike de Kock trained Motown Magic and Dean Kannemeyer’s Gimme A Star – during yesterday’s filing phase.

As expected Justin Snaith comes into this race with a powerful hand made up of Grade 1 Cape Guineas winner and Cape Town With fourth seeded Double Superlative along with Pomp And Power who placed second in the Guineas and fifth in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, beaten only 3.05 lengths by Jet Dark. Probably the biggest threat to the Snaith Runners comes from Universal, a half brother of Vardy.

The Adam Marcus-trained runner suffered serious disruption when he was not seeded in the Guineas, but proved his worth with victory in the Grade 3 Politician Stakes over 1800m on Cape Met day. The son of Gimmethegreenlight has won three of his six races and is likely to benefit from the Derby’s extra 200m.

Those three are by far the best weighted runners, but there are some improving runners in the lineup that could give some cheek. The Derby is one of seven races run in a day that is punctuated by some exceptional runners. There is also a Pick 6 transfer of R500,000 at the meeting with a likely pool of R3 million.
