Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain in KZN and EC

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a warning on Tuesday for severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall, strong damaging winds and excessive lightning in western parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

According to the weather service, this will lead to local flooding of vulnerable roads, low-lying areas and bridges, as well as local damage to infrastructure and vehicles.

“A surface valley over the western interior and a cut off layer southwest of the country are expected to result in a good chance of thunderstorms over the Eastern Cape. There are better opportunities inland, where these storms can become severe and have minor impacts from heavy downpours, strong damaging winds and excessive lightning,” the weather service warned in a statement Monday.

This is because extremely high fire hazard conditions are expected over the Dawid Kruiper, Kai !Garib, !Kheis and Siyathemba Vanir-exodus Municipality of the Northern Cape.
