More than five people were killed in a shootout with police officers near South Rand Hospital Friday afternoon.
Police spokesman Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed the incident and said Police Minister Bheki Cele would provide more information during a media address Monday night.
According to Shawn Herbst of Netcare 911, two police officers were also shot during the incident.
“Shortly after 4 p.m., Netcare 911 received information about a shooting, possibly a hostage situation, at a location near South Rand Hospital. When medics arrived on the scene, a full-scale gunfight had broken out between the suspects, SAPS and JMPD. Two police officers were shot and found to be in critical condition, due to the nature of their injuries they were flown to specialist hospitals in Gauteng,” Herbst said. Newzroom Africa†
