Orange level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms in EC



An orange level 5 warning was issued for severe thunderstorms with heavy rain over OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo district councils and Mbashe local municipality in the Eastern Cape on Friday.

The central parts of the Free State and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal will also experience severe thunderstorms with heavy rain.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), this can lead to localized flooding of vulnerable roads, low-lying areas and bridges, as well as localized damage to infrastructure, settlements (formal/informal), property and vehicles.

Friday’s weather forecast

Gauteng: Partly cloudy and warm with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Mpumalanga: Morning fog along the slope, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thunderstorms, except in the northeast. It gets hot in the Lowveld.

Limpopo: Fine and warm to hot but partly cloudy in the south with isolated showers and thunderstorms in the far southwest.

North West: Cloudy and warm with scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms, but isolated in the far northeast, clearing from the west in the afternoon.

Free State: Cloudy and warm with scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms, clearing from the west in the afternoon.

Northern Cape: Cloudy along the coast and adjacent inland at first with morning fog, others fine and warm to hot, but partly cloudy over the eastern interior with isolated showers and thunderstorms, but scattered in the far east, clearing from the west in the afternoon. Winds along the coast are light and changeable, becoming light to moderate from the south to southwest in the afternoon.

Western Cape: Fine in the west, otherwise partly cloudy to cloudy and warm but cool in the south. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in the east and towards the end of the afternoon on the south coast. Winds along the coast will be moderate to moderately strong from the south to southeast, before becoming strong along the southwest coast. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very high

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and cool weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Winds along the coast will be weak to moderate from the southwest.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Winds along the coast are weak from the south and moderate from the southwest.

KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm but hot in places in the north. In the afternoon it will become cloudy from the south with scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms, but isolated in the north except in the far northeast.

Partly cloudy and warm, but cool in the southwest. In the afternoon it will become cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms, but isolated in the north, except in the extreme northeast.

Winds along the coast are moderate to moderate from an easterly to northeasterly direction, becoming strong to strong from south to southwest in the evenings.
