Pirates don’t shoot in another draw

Orlando Pirates’ dominance failed to inspire them to victory as they were held to a goalless draw by Cape Town in a DStv Premiership game at Orlando Stadium yesterday.

It was a disappointing result for Bucs as they forfeited a second place chance on the log, with the side wasting some scoring opportunities, although City had their moments too. With the result, Pirates remain in fourth place on the log with 32 points after 21 games, while a point for City takes them to eighth place, with 27 points from 19 games.

Deon Hotto had the first chance after being set up by Kabelo Dlamini in the opening 10 minutes, but the Namibian failed to convert from the penalty area.

On the other hand, City shot-stopper Hugo Marques was kept busy by the Buccaneers and he made a good save when he denied Bandile Shandu in the 29th minute.

But the keeper was lucky not to concede five minutes later, with a sloppy defense by City players who almost gave Bucs their opening goal, but Thabang Monare shot the ball over the crossbar.

As they approached halftime, the Mother City club got stronger and created some good chances, but Tashreeq Morris and Thabo Modada were denied by Siyabonga Mpontshane in the Pirates goals.

Bucs didn’t have the same opportunities in the second half, and City wanted to correct the mistakes in the first half.

Fortune Makaringe almost sent Pirates off to celebrate, but the Marques was there to make a save 54 minutes into the game, before Cape City also got their own chance via skipper Thamsanqa Mkhize, but he missed the ball in the Pirates penalty area to check.

By the end it was all about managing the game for both sides and they moved on to sharing the loot

Pirates have another tough league game against rivals Kaizer Chiefs at home on Saturday, while Cape Town City will look for a better performance when they take on Sekhukhune United on the same day.
