Pitso hopes Tau will be fit for Sundowns return

Pitso Mosimane hopes Percy Tau will return to play for Al Ahly by the time they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Café Champions League in Phokeng over the weekend of March 11-13.

A quadriceps injury forced Tau to miss the FIFA Club World Cup, although he did travel with the team to Abu Dhabi, where Mosimane’s side won the bronze medal for the second consecutive year.

Tau has indeed not played for Ahly this year and will miss the Champions League resumption with Ahly this weekend against Sudan’s Al Hilal, before taking on Sundowns in Cairo on February 25.

Ahly’s head coach explained that Tau was upset that he couldn’t play in the Club World Cup, which would have been another chance to showcase his talents to the world.

“For the first game (of the World Cup for clubs) I was in Percy’s room. I saw that he was motivated. I said to him, ‘I know you came to play the world.’ I said to him ‘hey, help us in the Champions League,’” Mosimane said this week in conversation with the South African Football Journalists Association.

“He was disappointed that he didn’t have a chance at the World Cup, it was a chance to show the world that he should have had a chance in Brighton.”

Tau came from Sundowns to Brighton in the English Premier League in 2018, but spent his first two and a half seasons there on loan in Belgium, and even when he got a work permit to play in England, the attacking star of Bafana got Bafana very little game time.

At the beginning of this season, he was reunited with Mosimane at Ahly.

“It was also sad for me (that he didn’t play in the Club World Cup), because that’s why I bought him,” Mosimane added.

“Percy is a professional, he is a tiger, at least he will make the second game against Sundowns, we want him to help us win the Champions League.”
