Police officer who assaulted disabled grandmother can go free

The Independent Investigative Directorate (IPID) has announced the arrest of a police officer who allegedly abused his 75-year-old grandmother.

According to a statement from the Ipid, a case of Assault and Crimen Injuria has been opened at Bohlokong Police Station in Bethlehem.

Shocking Abuse of Grandma

The officer is said to have urinated on his 75-year-old disabled grandmother and vomited.

“It is alleged that this is not the first time he assaulted his grandmother. He was arrested today (Thursday) and held in Bohlokong. It’s DV related,” Ipid’s statement read.

According to Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa, “It is alleged that the family is putting pressure on the grandmother to drop the case in order to save his police officer grandson.”

“It is also alleged that the suspected grandson has been abusing her for some time because of the pension payment.”

Case can be withdrawn

Langa said other government stakeholder departments are involved in the matter and have filed a report on the matter.

“The suspect has been detained at the Bohlokong Police Station in Bloemfontein and will appear tomorrow (Friday) February 18, 2022 at Bohlokong Magistrate Court for a formal bail application.

“It is possible that the case will be withdrawn due to interference from others in the family. The suspect was suspended for committing this alleged offence.”
