Relentless sunsets unstoppable? Mngqithi rejects championship talk

Mamelodi Sundowns are five wins and a draw away from taking last season’s DStv Premiership with a total of 67 points, but for Downs coach Manqoba Mngqithi the target is more than that as they are in pole position to the league win five times on the spin. Masandawana’s mentor suggested that the competition is not something high on their priority list, modestly saying that they are more focused on their performance.

“Our focus is never that much on the championship, we have our own processes that we focus on because that’s where we gauge ourselves,” said Mngqithi.

“Whether the championship is gone or not, it’s not really what we focus on, but we look at our milestones that we want to achieve. Even if the championship can be won sooner, we will still focus on improving our performance from last season and maybe try to get closer to the unthinkable in terms of the number of points, we are not really looking at the gap that everyone is on focused on,” he added.

Sundowns comes after a 3-0 win against struggling TS Galaxy, in a match that saw some outstanding goals from Haashim Domingo and Khuliso Mudau. Ultimately, Mudau was named Man-of-the-Match and his mentor thinks it’s time for him to be recognized by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

“Mudau has done well from the start of the season until now and he has been one of our standout performers, which is why he makes life difficult for Thapelo Morena in that space. We still believe he still has a bit more to because that boy’s potential is greater than what anyone thinks,” he said.

Mngqithi added: “Defensively he is very solid and he has many qualities in attack, he can also play as a central midfielder which helps him to solve some technical and tactical problems demanded in the game. He is one of the few modern fullbacks who can turn around and play central and feel comfortable taking opponents one-on-one he is also very quick and he wins a lot of doubles his stats are always going up and it’s only a matter of time before the national team manager sees him, but I have every confidence that he will join the national team very soon.”
