Samsung SmartTag Review: The tracker to your Keys, and The Key to your IoT, sounds like a movie title doesn’t it? But isn’t that what the Samsung SmartTag is? A tracker to your Keys, and The Key to your IoT? Or at least that’s what Samsung wants you to think. While it is definitely a great tracker, and it will open your IoT door, it’s not without it’s flaws.
Trackers are very useful tools for keeping track of items that you may have lost on any occasion. Since we spend more time on our phones and our days are hectic, it is very possible to forget something at home. We’ve seen quite a few trackers, I personally still use my Chipolo tracker, but the Samsung SmartTag could be more than just a tracker, it could connect to your home.
Looks and feels
The packaging is not interesting, as it is a small box with just the plotter and papers – that’s all. Personally I think they could have added a small strap to secure it, but there is a hole at the top to attach it to something. The tracker is simple and comfortable. The matte finish is also a good thing. Despite its matte texture, it is susceptible to scratches and scuffs. So I suggest you spend a little more and buy silicone cases, like we did for our SmartTags.
I’ll tell you up front: this tracker does NOT work with non-Samsung phones, due to a specific requirement – Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 – and do not confuse it with the SmartTag+, which uses UWB and will only work with phones that have UWB. To do this, simply launch SmartThings > Device Setup > Search for SmartTag. Once you find it and connect, the phone will download the protocol needed for it to work. Once this is done, you can configure it. There is a button on the plotter that you can press to pair it. Once the phone recognizes it, the tracker starts working. Make sure you sign in to your Samsung account to link it correctly.
Samsung SmartTag uses the same idea that has already been applied by brands like Tile, who are pioneers in the field of trackers. But Samsung has introduced a feature it thinks would be a good addition – and that’s an automation tool. I was so excited about it that after Samsung sent us a sample to test, we bought two more a week later to use not only as a key tracker for the house, but also as a key for my home’s IoT. Samsung should become compatible with other phones on the market that use BLE, so it will be a good tracker for non-Samsung users as well.
