Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from Sundowns walk the red carpet at Pitso?

A number of men have found themselves in situations where they become financially responsible for their girlfriends, pay their college fees and later, when the former graduates and get a job, they dump their partner for a new one, leaving the old ex with a sense of entitlement, claiming that the girlfriend is where they are in life because he sponsored their education.

If you’ve noticed, Pitso Mosimane has been acting like an embittered ex-boyfriend ever since he left Mamelodi Sundowns for Al-Ahly. Downs have done well, claiming trophies left right and center as they turned the DStv Premiership into their playground. Mosimane meanwhile – not in so many words – takes credit, suggesting that he has laid the groundwork and that Manqoba Mngqithi, Rhulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela are walking on a red carpet he laid.

To his credit, “Jingles” remains the most successful coach Masandawana and the entire country have ever seen, and he proved his worth in Egypt, where he won two Café Champions League titles along with a set of two bronze medals in the FIFA Club World Cup.

However, Mngqithi took a swipe at him right after Bafana Ba Style dealt a massive blow to the Red Devils last weekend by beating them 1-0 in the Champions League group stage.

“We are very pleased to have won in Cairo, but I must also say that I think it is also a victory for coach Pitso, because he has laid a foundation in this club. He put his foot forward and he always says that this team is playing its football, so if Ahly loses and we win, it means he still won,” said Mngqithi.

This win was Downs’ first at the defending champion’s home, and having played against each other a few times in recent years, Mngqithi said, although they got all three points – he thinks his side deserved the same last season when the two giants met .

“Winning in Cairo was always our plan, we wanted to win there, even last year. In fact, I think last year’s performance was stronger than last weekend’s performance. We had too many injuries and were a bit apprehensive in some areas because we knew the strength of Ahly and we had lost a fair number of starting players. From the goalkeeper, Denis Onyango, central defender Mosa Lebusa, and we lost Erwin Saavedra and Gift Motupa along with Pavol Safranko.”
