South Africa, meet your new ‘Idols SA’ judges

The long-awaited announcement of the new jury of Idols SA and Somizi Mhlongo’s somewhat surprising comeback took place on Wednesday at Urban Brew Studios.

The much-loved media personality is taking back his position on the jury after being temporarily kicked out of the show last year during a personal controversy.

Somizi was accused of abuse by his estranged husband Mohale Motaung, a claim he continued to deny during the media briefing.

The other judges are respected hip-hop artist JR Bogopa and actress and performer Thembi Seete.

Somizi said he did not want to delve into his private life as he is still dealing with the serious charges against him and just wanted to focus on being the best judge on the matter. idols SA

Seete is no stranger to our screens, the performer is known for her role as part of the kwaito group Boom Shaka and is currently an actress on gomorah.

Seete said what she will look forward to as a judge is that “magic,” someone who can become a superstar, adding that she wouldn’t describe it as such, but rather a singer who has everything.

JR added that they will keep their minds open for the different types of participants, but Somizi said he is looking for new amapiano talent.

“I want someone to win from amapiano, to continue to show that this is South African Idols.” He further stated that it will be raw rural talent from untouched parts of the country.

Somizi said he will be bringing something different from his previous appearances on the show, “bigger and better”.

So, how did the idols SA judges define themselves? JR said he will be his own version of himself and not imitate previous judges.

“I will be the best version of JR. Some people have said that my criticism is harsh, but constructive,” he said.

It was the first time all three judges had been in the same room since they got the job and the chemistry between them was easy. The talk and advice kept flowing, with Somizi adding that they’ve all worked together on various projects over the past two decades.

Director of Vanir-exodus Entertainment Channels at M-Net Nomsa Philiso, said that reviews and attracting new audiences were part of their decision when the new judges were chosen.
