Supersport returns to winning ways with a win over AmaZulu

If luck isn’t on your side there’s not much you can do and that was the case for Benni McCarthy and his AmaZulu side who suffered a 2-0 defeat by SuperSport United in the DStv Premiership at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday .

While the maximum number of points went to the home side, the most opportunities came for Usuthu, but they were unable to convert them into goals. It was one of those days where you could see that even if the match went on until midnight, AmaZulu still wouldn’t find the back of the net.

Usuthu hit the woodwork twice and lost many chances, including a penalty.

Jesse Donn opened the scoring for United 33 minutes into the game after goalkeeper Veli Mothwa failed to get the ball from a corner, which he tamely scrambled down Donn’s alley, who made no mistake and shot into a relatively empty net.

In the second stanza, Mothwa was again the culprit, this time launching the ball from his penalty area, but was unable to send it into the field as the ball was intercepted. Trying to regain possession, Mothwa moved a little off his line, chasing the stray ball, but Iqraam Rayners got to the ball first and curled up in an empty net.

Earlier, the KwaZulu-Natal side was awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute. Jammie Webber dragged Makhehlene Makhaula down into the penalty area and referee Abongile Tom had no choice but to point to the dot. Bongi Ntuli took responsibility from 12 yards out, but Ronwen Williams would not be defeated by Ntuli’s careless effort. He had a second bite when Williams parried, but again the Bafana Bafana shot stopper was on top of his game as he comfortably collected the ball.

To make matters worse for Usuthu, defender Thapelo Xoki was shown a second yellow card in injury time, much to McCarthy’s chagrin.

The result returned The Spartans to winning ways after two straight defeats to Maritzburg United and Royal AM, and they haven’t crept into the top half of the table as Kaitano Tembo has led his team to 29 points.
