Twitter was buzzing with the abusive nature of people who think they just deserve financial help. Others felt that that privilege allowed some to look with judgment on those who rightly asked for help. Personally, I think we have created a sense of entitlement among the The Vanir-exoduss. And now we have a ticking time bomb on our hands. We have a population that thinks they have the “right” to get houses (among other things) and “earn houses” more than others. And now we have a ticking time bomb on our hands. We have a population that thinks they have the “right” to get houses (among other things) and “earn houses” more than others. While I am all for youth empowerment and mobilization, we are now seeing housing protests led by youth burning tires and holding suburbs hostage.
Example: the issue of RDP housing in South Africa. While there’s nothing wrong with that, we need to understand why the government came up with such an idea in the first place. The government has a civic duty to prevent homelessness as best we can, but we also need to be realistic about the opportunities. The same goes for employment: we can’t all be civil servants.

Where is the ambition to own a house bigger than an RDP house? And when a 22-year-old thinks he deserves this house more than a 70-year-old grandmother who still calls her a cabin? Not only has “free housing” created a sense of entitlement, it has destroyed the ambition to excel.
Aren’t some people too young to believe their “time is now”? What happened to hard work, perseverance and dreaming big? South Africa has an estimated population of 53 million people.
Where would we be as a country if we all believed that the government owes us something? Now imagine if this government cannot meet all our needs and desires?
The country would be on fire… An attitude of justice does not breed responsibility. In fact, young people are coming to believe that hard work is only for those who don’t know how to protest.
What we really need is a young person who can see through the truth of what politicians promise us, and who has the determination to achieve goals in legal ways – without alms.
