Twitter is probably planning to add a built-in podcast tab

As Twitter’s live audio product Spaces continues to grow in popularity, it seems the tech giant is already looking to build a podcast tab on its mobile apps. A screenshot posted by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong shows a microphone icon in the bottom menu bar of the app, which redirects to a page titled “Podcasts.” Also read – Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal Announces Return to Office from March 15

The screenshot itself is not indicative of how the podcast feature would work Twitter, or if it’s the next step for Spaces – some sort of integration for the audio-only chat rooms. It would make sense to reorganize Spaces into a separate tab as it is currently only populated at the top of the feeds. Spaces first launched in 2020 and Twitter delved even deeper into the audio medium after acquiring Breaker, a social podcast platform. Only recently, Spaces released a very important update, allowing anyone to create a chat room and allow all mobile users to record conversations. The feature offers Spaces qualities like that of podcasts, although the recordings are temporary, lasting only 30 days. Adding a special podcast feature will throw Twitter into the playing field against other giants like Spotify or Apple Podcasts. With the supposed update, listeners no longer need to participate in or listen to Spaces broadcasts within the 30-day limit, they could just pick and listen at their leisure. Twitter is just another name in a long list of social media platforms trying to generate more revenue by supporting podcasts. Facebook launched a podcast feature for select creators last year. Reddit recently turned on recording for its audio-only Talks. How far the Twitter podcast will come to fruition remains to be seen, but if it does, it will be a major update to an already successful Spaces.
